Need some help from the Smith and Wesson guru's. My wife purchased a model 36 before we were married from a gun show. I've been researching the internet for quite some time and getting alot of conflicting information. I'm getting differing opinions as to where the serial number is. Some references are saying the butt of the handle and some say inside the hinge. On the grip butt there is a prefix of AEJ which I find no reference. The following numbers are 9093. The revolver is stamped with model 36 inside the hinge which I see means after 1957. The serial numbers that I found on the internet do not make sense with the numbers that I am finding. The number inside the hinge which some references that I found say that this is the serial number is 61479. The info that I've seen reference XX's following numbers - that is not the case with this. The gun is; I believe a 2 screw (?) and the grip is rounded wood diamond. The barrel release is not the older flat from what I can tell but curved. I see reference to 'pinning' but am not sure what that means. This started because I was thinking of us trading it in so she could have a lighter carry such as the new Ruger LCR. Would appreciate input from those in the know. Thank's

Jan 29, 2010 Need some help from the Smith and Wesson guru's. My wife purchased a model 36 before we were married from a gun show. I've been researching the internet for quite some time and getting alot of conflicting information. I'm getting differing opinions as to where the serial number is. Some references are saying the butt of the handle and some say inside the hinge. That serial number series was used for several models. When you open the cylinder, you'll see the model number stamped on the frame just above where the yoke pivots. A model 36 is a Chiefs Special A model 37 is a Chiefs Special Airweight A model 38 is a Bodyguard Airweight And a model 49 is a Bodyguard Jim. May 17, 2008 This smith & wesson revolver is a.38 special caliber The serial number is S 8551XX Here are the pictures, in one of these you can see the serial number, in the cylinder. While we are talking about Chiefs Specials, how likely is it that one with a serial number around 571900 would have been shipped in a box that does not have the Bangor Punta label? One end has the old style lettering in four lines: Smith & Wesson -.38 Chiefs Special - Blue Finish Model 36 - Round Butt 2-inch Barrel. May 24, 2008 Ok, here's one I just picked up. Smith and Wesson Model 36 (no dash) with adjustable sights with Serial # 391XXX. Help dating the gun would be appreciated. Sorry for the repeat post, but I think I was getting lost in the shuffle of the other thread. Couldn't find a Model 36 SN that is like yours. 1950-1969 shows 5-6 digit numbers with no letters and 1969-1983 all SN's start with J. Does show that the 36-1 started in 1967. There is a some interesting information listed about the early production models in the 'Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

Smith Wesson Serial Numbers Manufacture Date
Kamerer,
Thank you very much for your time and the detailed reply. That was a lot of great info, especially the load recommendations as I would have more than likely made the mistake of using an improper round.
One of the reasons I bought this piece is that it has an entertaining history. Apparently it was a duty weapon for an San Jose area officer in the 60's and 70's and then was eventually sold as a private transaction to an officer at my department around 1980. Shortly after that it was stolen from the officers home during a burg. and used in a crime/shootout (actully true though I thought he was pulling my leg at first) and eventually returned after being collected by San Jose PD at the crime scene. Since then it has collected dust in our department safe until this past week when I purchased it.
I checked the grip and it doesn't match the diamond pattern in the picture, so it must have been replaced at some point. The person I bought it from believes the original owner was an armorer for his department and he believes a custom trigger was also installed.
I've attached a couple of pics. The gun is actually in much better shape than the pics make it look as it had 20+ years of dust/grime on it at the time the pics were taken. The only real wear is some light to moderate holster burn at the muzzle. So neither of us knew what it was worth and we eventually agreed on $120. Since the guy I bought it from is a good friend I don't have any intention of taking him for a ride. Do I owe him some more money? Thank you again for your help.
